In
1996 I graduated from Bryant College with a degree in Business
Management. Since then I have worked for my dad, Lee, who owns
Liberty Contracting Company. I’m currently in charge of the rock
crushing division of the company and when not crushing at our own
shop I’m traveling to various job sites using our portable
crusher.
I
started racing in 1996 after completing a Brett Hearn Racing
School workshop along with my dad. I started my racing career a
little later than most but in only seven years of racing I have
gained an enormous amount of experience and with the help of Team
Liberty look forward to even greater things in the years to come.
In
1999, my 4th year of Sportsman racing, I had the
ultimate “dream” season, winning three championship titles. They
were the championships at my home track of Orange County Fair
Speedway, Rolling Wheels Raceway and the overall Mr. DIRT
Sportsman Championship. I must say I am most proud of being the
first Sportsman driver in Orange County ‘s history to win the Mr.
DIRT Sportsman Championship. It really felt great to be able to
bring this prestigious title ‘home’ to my supporters and fans at
Orange County.
In
2001 I moved up to the Modified division. We had a remarkable 1st
year, capturing 3 wins and finished 6th in points. I
had some of the most memorable nights in my racing career in this,
my 1st Modified season. At season end I was awarded
the Modified “Rookie of the Year” title.

TEAM LIBERTY
Owner/Crew Chief - Lee J. Shultz
-
Crew:
Lee J. Shultz
– Chris’ father is the backbone of the racing team. Lee’s primary
focus is furnishing the team with first-class equipment. He is
also in charge of motor development and spends numerous hours with
our premier motor builder JPM Engines, trying to
find that right combination to make us a little bit faster. Lee
is also the team’s crew chief. He is in charge of at track
adjustments to keep the cars handling at peak performance.
Dick Humphrey – Dick handles a lot of
our pre-race preparations at the shop. Having an experienced hand
to help out really takes some of the load off my dad and me.
Tony Petrucci - Tony helps out
whenever he can with our tire program. His years of experience are
a great asset to the team.
Needless to say, everyone jumps in whenever necessary to make sure
the Liberty Racing cars are prepared for a night of racing!
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN RACING?
My
dad and I attended the Brett Hearn Racing School in 1995 and we
were hooked on Modifieds!
DO
YOU HAVE A MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AND WHAT WAS IT?
OCFS
Modified Feature-Saturday, June 16, 2001 (Rookie Season). The
night I was able to catch and pass Brett Hearn, the driver I most
respect and admire, in the 4th turn to take the win.
Winning was great, but to be lucky enough to get by the most
impassable driver in DIRT racing was just unbelievable for me!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRACK AND WHY?
I’d
have to say my home track of Orange County Fair Speedway because
of the strong competition. It’s also a very challenging track and
I like that!
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME AWAY FROM THE TRACK?
I enjoy taking Matthew and Ellie 4 wheeling at
our gravel pit. Check out the dune buggy “Poppy” gave Matthew for
his birthday last November (see photo’s). Karin and I take also
take the kids skiing most winter weekends at our local ski area.
I’ve gotten back to snowboarding which I did a lot of in college. |
